Body Sugaring for Hair Removal

References to body sugaring depilation can be traced back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Mesopotamia. Body sugaring is a safe, natural and affordable way to remove unwanted hair at the roots. It consists of a mixture of honey, sugar and lemon – treatments last anywhere from four to six weeks. Give it a try by following the outlined simple directions. Be sure to wash the area you will be working on thoroughly and dry well.

What you will need:

  • Popsicle stick or tongue depressor
  • Strips of cotton fabric cut 1-inch wide and 8 to 10-inches long
  • Candy thermometer

Ingredients for the mixture:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup honey
  • Juice from 1 lemon (without pulp)

Preparation of the mixture:

  1. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and turn the heat to medium. When mixture boils, reduce heat to low and stir often to prevent it from boiling over. As soon as the temperature on the thermometer records 250 degrees Celsius, remove saucepan from the stove.
  2. Pour mixture into a glass Mason jar and allow it to cool at room temperature. It is important for the mixture to cool because you can burn your skin if it is not properly cooled.

Body sugaring paste Applying the mixture:

  1. Lightly dust area with corn starch before applying mixture. This will make the process less painful.
  2. Use a Popsicle stick or tongue depressor to spread a thin layer of the mixture over the corn starched area. Apply mixture in the direction of the hair growth. Place the cotton strip fabric on the area, rub strip vigorously.
  3. Allow strip to sit for one minute on the area, and then proceed to pull skin tight with one hand and quickly rip off the strip in the opposite direction of the hair growth. Use as many strips as necessary and repeat process to completely remove hair from the target area. Mixture can be reheated if it becomes too cool.

waxing strip Do not forget:

  • Refrigerate mixture for use at a later date (Simply reheat it).
  • If mixture hardens you can add about 1 tablespoon of water when you are reheating it.
  • Hair must be at least 1/4-inch long for the depilation to work.
  • Do not apply mixture to area with cuts, scrapes, scar tissue, stretch marks, abrasions, warts, moles, skin tags, varicose veins, around the eye area, or if you are suffering from any other skin condition.

Cleopatra’s Beauty Secret

Cleopatra’s beauty mesmerized men and led her to engage in the most scandalous love affairs of her time. What was Cleopatra’s famous beauty secret she used to seduce men? She accentuated her beauty and youth by regularly indulging in milk and honey baths. Milk contains lactic acid and has anti-aging properties which produce collagen and exfoliate dead skin cells. Honey seals in moisture, is anti bacterial and leaves skin feeling silky soft. Cleopatra also added jasmine or rose oil to her milk and honey bath, but feel free to add your preferred essential oil to the recipe. Thanks to Cleopatra, milk baths have recently made a big comeback.

  • 3 cups full fat milk
  • ½ cup raw honey (any brand)
  • 10 drops any essential oil (optional)

  1.  Fill bathtub with hot water

The hotter the water, the better it is for dissolving the ingredients. You can cool the water to a comfortable temperature prior to taking your bath.

  1. Dissolve the honey

Place the raw honey in a cup and dissolve by pouring ½ cup of boiling water over the honey, then simply stir until honey has dissolved. Add cup contents to the bath water.

  1. Pour the milk

Measure your milk and pour directly into bath water.

  1. Add your choice of essential oil and pour in bathtub. (optional)
  2. Mix

Use your hand to swirl and mix all the ingredients in the bath water before you indulge. Slip in, relax and enjoy! Cleopatra Lydia M.

Raw Honey Facial Masks

Honey is full of great benefits for the skin. Honey has many properties that make this a goldmine for the skincare regime. it has antibacterial properties that are great in healing acne, antioxidant properties that help slow down the appearance of aging skin and lastly, it is extremely moisturizing and soothing, that will leave your skin healthy and glowing.

The best kind of honey to use is raw honey. Raw honey is the most original sweet liquid that honeybees produce from the concentrated nectar of flowers. Collected straight from the extractor, it’s unheated, unpasteurized, and unprocessed; which for the most part you can find at any health food store, such as, The Health Tree or Marche Tau. I would beware of the honey sold at most supermarkets, because regular honey is processed and pasteurized. Raw honey is a tad more expensive than the regular honey, but it is worth it as anything you put on your is absorbed into your body.

Below I have found a few honey facials for every skin type, and the best part, you only need 2 to 3 ingredients that you probably already have in your fridge or pantry! There is no need to spend lots of money to look fabulous.

1) Honey Face Mask for Acne-Prone skin

  • 3 teaspoons raw honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Mix the honey and cinnamon together, and apply to your face. Leave the mask on for 10-30 minutes. The antibacterial properties of both the honey and the cinnamon are especially beneficial for acne-prone skin. (Cinnamon can occasionally be irritating if your skin is really sensitive, so you might want to do a patch test on the back of your hand first.)

2) Honey Face Mask for Dry Skin

  • 1 teaspoon mashed avocado
  • 1 teaspoon plain whole milk yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey

Mix the ingredients in a small bowl until smooth. spread the mixture over your face and let it sit for 20-30 minutes before washing it off. The fats in the avocado and whole milk yogurt are deeply moisturizing to the skin, while the lactic acid in the yogurt soothes your skin, refines pores, and stimulates collagen production.

3) Honey Face Mask for Sensitive Skin

  • 2 teaspoons raw honey
  • 1 teaspoon Aloe Vera gel

Stir the Aloe Vera and the honey together and apply over your face. Leave it on for about 10-20 minutes. Aloe Vera soothes inflammation and calms your skin, perfect for those with sensitive, irritated skin.

4) Honey Face Mask for Scars and Dark Spots

  • 2 teaspoons raw honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Combine the lemon juice and honey, and apply the mixture to your face. Allow it to sit for 20-30 minutes. Lemon juice exfoliates your skin, brightens dark spots and fades scars. Your skin will feel smooth and soft right away, but it may take a few applications to notice a real difference in scars and spots.

I will definitely be adding raw honey to my next shopping list. According to celebrity news, Jennifer Lopez, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Scarlett Johansson are big fans of the honey facials, and who doesn’t want to have skin like J.Lo? Good enough for them, good enough for me!

Psst, hey guys, we know you’re vain too, so give it a try! We won’t tell anyone!

Honibe Lozenges and Immunitor–New Tuberculosis Treatment

Island Abby, is a Prince Edward Island company that was established by John and Susan Rowe in 2004 to market a solid form of pure honey drops, called Honibe lozenges. The company’s honey drops were created as a sweetener for hot beverages and to provide relief for sore throats.

John Rowe was approached by various manufacturers about the applications of his honey lozenges to deliver medicine. Immunitor, is the manufacturer that worked with Island Abby to formulate the Honibe drops with Immunoxel, a liquid extract from 25 different plants used to treat cold and flu and even tuberculosis.

According to the 2013 World Health Organization statistics, there are over nine million people inflicted by tuberculosis, a highly contagious lung infection.

Immunoxel is currently an alcohol based liquid that is problematic for shipping and also has a reduced shelf life. The development of a dry delivery system has increased the product’s shelf life and facilitated usage and dosage.

Immunitor tested four different dry forms and the Honibe lozenges proved the most successful. Test results from the 18 patients who were administered the Immunoxel in the Honibe lozenges indicated clear sputum tests after only one month. Although honey is more expensive than sugar; the advantages are far greater than the cost.

Magical Honey Turnip Cough Syrup

When I was a little girl and had a cold with a cough, my grandmother would prepare this natural and truly magical (because it works) cough syrup that was inexpensive to make and extremely effective – with eight kids it was also a money saver for her. The concoction has no side effects, is completely natural; and cures any cough better than commercially packaged syrups.

  1. 1 medium size white or black turnip (rutabagas)
  2. 1/2 cup raw honey

  • Cut off the top of the turnip and scoop out the inside to resemble a small bowl. The created hole in the turnip should be large enough to hold the honey and any juices that will be released from the inside of the turnip.
  • Add the honey in the turnip and place the turnip in a larger container and cover container with lid. Leave the turnip in the container for 2-3 hours, depending on the temperature of the room. The warmer the room temperature, the faster the syrup will be ready to use.
  • Take 2 teaspoons of the syrup, 3-4 times a day as needed. You may use for as long as you have cold symptoms.

LR - Grandma Recipe

Note: Black turnip has even greater antibiotic qualities. The honey acts as an extracting agent and draws out a natural component from the turnip that produces a natural antibiotic. This natural antibiotic relieves the following cold symptoms: sore throat, cough, hoarseness and congestion.
